Behind the A-5 UDT
A WWII dive watch, revived
During World War II, the BUSHIPS system was how Underwater Demolition Teams made sure their watches stayed water resistant through long dives. The A-5 UDT keeps the oversized crown and solid case of that design, and pairs it with a modern automatic movement and a sapphire crystal.
A-5 UDT specifications
- Blue Sunray: 38mm sandblasted stainless steel, 20 ATM water resistance, 20mm strap fit, double-domed sapphire with anti-reflection coating, embossed Swiss Super-LumiNova indexes, baton hands.
- Black: 38mm stainless steel, 20 ATM water resistance.
- Movements: Miyota 9039 and Soprod P024 automatic configurations are both offered. Configuration depends on the selected model; check its product listing.
- References: Black ($450), Abyss Blue and Blue Sunray (from $645).
- Straps: black or blue tropic rubber, with a criss-cross pattern and punched holes for breathing, OG-107 NATO, green canvas, or the Beads of Rice bracelet.

What was a BUSHIPS watch?
BUSHIPS refers to the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships design used in World War II. Underwater Demolition Teams relied on it to keep their watches water resistant on long dives. The A-5 UDT is the Praesidus revival of that design.
How water resistant is the A-5 UDT?
The A-5 UDT Blue Sunray is rated to 20 ATM. It has a 38mm sandblasted stainless steel case, an oversized crown and a double-domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflection coating.
What strap does the A-5 UDT come with?
The Black comes on green canvas, black tropic rubber or an OG-107 NATO. The blue references come on blue tropic rubber or the Beads of Rice bracelet. All use a 20mm fit.
