Wearability Rooted in Original Proportions

Sized at 38mm, the Rec Spec OG Sunray stays true to the proportions that made the originals so effective on the wrist. The 4-hour integrated crown reduces overall wrist presence while protecting against accidental snags, resulting in a watch that wears slim, secure, and unobtrusive in any environment. Powering the watch is the dependable NH36 automatic movement, offering hacking seconds, a day-date complication, and a 39-hour power reserve; a configuration that mirrors the functionality of the original MACV-SOG watches and reinforces their practical, no-nonsense character.

A Dial That Reveals the Truth Behind the SOG Watches

The Rec Spec OG Sunray is the closest homage we’ve created to the MACV-SOG watches of the 1960s, not by exaggerating their tactical nature, but by embracing their true origins. These watches were never designed as military tools; they were dress watches, repurposed out of necessity. The dark-gray sunray dial reflects that unexpected heritage, a finish that feels almost out of place on a field watch yet entirely authentic to the originals sourced in local Vietnamese markets. Fluorescent green Super-Luminous paint on the hands and indexes recreates the look of the radioactive Tritium used in 1967, preserving the unmistakable visual identity of these quietly legendary timepieces.

The Rec Spec Project: Honoring Improvisation and Reality

The Rec Spec project began with firsthand insight from John “Tilt” Stryker Meyer, a former MACV-SOG member whose experience shed light on how these watches truly entered service. Operating outside traditional supply chains, SOG teams sourced equipment wherever they could, including purchasing Seiko dress watches directly from Vietnamese markets. Those watches accompanied them on some of the most dangerous reconnaissance missions of the war. Rec Spec, short for “Reconnaissance Spec,” pays tribute to that reality: the men, the missions, and the unconventional gear that proved its worth under the most extreme conditions. This watch is not just a reissue, but a reflection of adaptability, resourcefulness, and history worn on the wrist.
