In the 1970's the US Mobility Equipment Research & Design Command (MERDC) developed a system of camo patterns for US Army Vehicles. The idea was that a single pattern would be used with a palette of 12 colors. By switching 1 or 2 colors that were painted on the vehicle, you could rapidly adapt the vehicle's camo to an entirely different environment.
