Balanced Proportions, Everyday Wearability

At 38mm, the case stays true to the proportions of the original 1960s watches, offering a compact and comfortable fit across a wide range of wrists. The 4-hour integrated crown placement reduces overall wrist presence while protecting the crown from accidental snags, keeping the watch slim, secure, and unobtrusive whether worn in the field or off-duty. Inside, the dependable NH36 automatic movement delivers hacking seconds, a day-date complication, and a 39-hour power reserve; a practical setup that mirrors the configuration used in the original MACV-SOG watches.

White Numerals, A Different Expression of the Same Story

The Rec Spec White Sunray is the most refined interpretation of the MACV-SOG re-edit. Where other versions lean into high-contrast, utilitarian color, this edition is defined by its white Super-Luminous indexes and hands, giving the dial a noticeably calmer, more elegant presence. Set against the dark-gray sunray dial, the white lume highlights the watch’s dress-watch origins, a combination that feels deliberately at odds with what a field watch is supposed to be. That tension is exactly the point. The original MACV-SOG watches were never designed for combat; they were civilian dress watches pressed into service, and this dial treatment captures that unexpected reality.

The Rec Spec Project: Authenticity Over Myth

The Rec Spec project began through conversations with John “Tilt” Stryker Meyer, a former MACV-SOG member whose firsthand experience clarified how these watches truly entered service. Operating outside conventional military procurement, SOG teams sourced equipment wherever they could, including purchasing Seiko dress watches directly from Vietnamese markets. That unconventional sourcing explains why these watches looked so different from standard-issue military timepieces of the era, and why they worked so well regardless. Rec Spec, short for “Reconnaissance Spec,” is a tribute to the men, the missions, and the unorthodox equipment that proved itself behind enemy lines.
